Wellness is a mindset and a lifestyle…and so is sickness.  Here are some mindsets that with small shifts will change your life IMMEDIATELY, and help heal the sickness around us. Health Insurance vs. Wellness Coverage Don’t treat Health Insurance like Car Insurance.  Car Insurance is used to limit your cost of damage in accidents. While the preventive maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is up to you. There are preventive maintenance benefits covered in many Healthcare plans because it saves money in the long term if you are healthy instead of sick.  Here are a few typical Wellness Benefits: Annual physicals, teeth cleanings, smoking cessation, and nutritional support.  So check out your Health Insurance coverage and utilize it as a wellness plan, not a sickness plan.  Get your money’s worth.

Exercise vs. Active Lifestyle Exercise has become a chore.  We have added tools, watches, Personal Trainers, and all types of gym concepts–Barre, yoga, CrossFit, Orange Theory, Pilates & Bootcamp to name a few. It’s overwhelming and can make you want to just forget about it altogether.  And that is exactly what is happening.  The more tools we have the more sedentary our culture is becoming.  Crazy right?  So just change your mindset to simply be more active and spend time outdoors as much as possible. Simple.  Walk after a meal.  Rent those public bikes in your city for an outing. Go to the beach or the park and just hang out.  Activity is the key.  Movement and engaging with nature can fulfill your mind and your body. Not too intimidating, right?

News vs. Education Ever heard that mantra no news is Good news?  The news on TV is almost all bad.  Who decided that it is our civic duty to be inundated with all the bad things going on in the world? Digest just enough news to be well-informed and educated.  Don’t dwell in the 24-hour news cycle. Get what you need, and then deliberately immerse yourself in what information is relevant for your health and your community.  Tune into THAT.

Eating vs. Nourishment I could go on and on about this.  I’ve even written a book on Mindful Eating to Improve Wellbeing.  Food is wonderful and one of the most important relationships we have in our lives. Taste has become more important than food’s impact on our body. Enjoy the taste, but moreover, consider the nourishing value of what you consume. Nourishment is actually foods’ purpose. Nourishment is more important than taste. If you have ever truly been hungry then you know this to be the Truth.  Shifting this mindset alone will dramatically improve your wellbeing…and compassion.

Sleep vs. Rest There’s an epidemic of Sleep Deprivation.  Working long hours and stress are the main culprits.  The body must sleep just like it must eat and drink.  And like eating, we take it for granted and it’s making us sick. Rejuvenating the body requires rest. TV noise and blue lights keep the body working when what it really needs is to shut all the way down and rest.
