Can you believe it’s February already??? Let’s look at January in review. But first, let’s look at our time in context of the bigger picture, shall we? Time is just a measurement that we let rule our lives. We cling to it. It’s like we had a bad dream, and decided to live the next day as if what happened was real. In which case I’m still falling off of that cliff, and perpetually showing up late for the SATs. We apply Time to everything and now we can’t seem to make a move without checking it. How much time has passed, and how much time do we have left?
Scientists believe the Universe is about 15 billion years old, and human-kind came into existence maybe 200,000 years ago. However, societies continually collapse, disappear and have to start over again and again. Ancient civilizations that created the Pyramids, the Great Chinese wall, and the Mayan rock structures were much more advanced than ours. We think we’re banging it out with the internet, but this is all really baby stuff.
Throughout the 200,000 years, humankind keeps undoing itself. We advance to a point where we become our own worst enemy, the environment wipes us out, and then we have to start over. How does this happen? “Through exploitation of natural resources, deforestation, political and social unrest, diseases and the Ice-age are listed as possible causes for the fall of prior civilizations.” Does this sound eerily familiar?
So back to our January 2019 review. Let’s see, we’re in the middle of the coldest Polar Vortex in decades in the US. Temperatures are swinging 100 degrees in some locations in a matter of 72 hours. The homeless are exposed and people are freezing to death. Governments are shutting down and people are starving while the world’s ultra-rich hold their annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. With membership fees starting at $50,000 that don’t even include a ticket to attend the event. A quick read about the Davos meeting is here if you are unfamiliar with it. I confess I only learned about this ultra-wealthy society recently. I mean, why would I? It’s so far from the life of 99.9% of the world, I just can’t stomach it.
So what’s the point? What IS the point? Here is the point… Since time is just a construct, and the Universe has an autocorrect feature, we need to make a difference now. It is neither too early nor too late. Right now we can be the civilization that that protects the environment, feeds the homeless and the hungry, and provides resources so that everyone has access to a life of wellbeing. Isn’t that what civilized nations do? Well apparently, no one knows for sure, but let’s give it a try shall we? We’ll get it right eventually.
Stay warm people. And remember, the future is created in the present.
